A northeast couple work with Mother Nature to grow flavoursome berries.

Down the hill from the northeast Victorian gold rush town of Beechworth is the small farming community of Wooragee. Here, farmers raise sheep and cattle, and one enterprising farming couple is making the most of the rich soil and mild climate to grow exceptional berries.

From September to May, husband and wife Bob Dunnett and Usa Suebsung are busy growing and harvesting strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries. They sell these from the farm gate and at local Albury-Wodonga, Wangaratta, Myrtleford and Bright farmers markets. They also have a thriving pick-your-own business, with customers driving from across the state to make the most of their delicious and nutritious little fruit.

The reasons for Beechworth Berries’ success are manifold. The pair are meticulous with the care of their plants, removing old and dead leaves by hand. This canopy management allows air to flow through the canes and foliage, reducing the chance of diseases like mildew, which can require sprays. “We spend a lot of time working among the berries,” says Dunnett, “but the effort is worth it. You can taste the difference.”

The pair are also keen on using good bugs to fight bad bugs, a technique known as integrated pest management. This also reduces the need for sprays. In fact, this year only one biological spray was needed across the entire one hectare of the farm that is planted with berries.

The strawberries are grown waist-high on special trays on coconut fibre, reducing insect and pest attacks and dirt contamination. The other berries, however, are grown in the rich red clay for which this fertile region is known.

Beechworth Berries also makes thick and fruity berry jam and healthy smoothies to sell at the farm gate.
